Ordinary Music, for bassclarinet & doublebass

This is the first composition in my eponymus list of works (counting 56 up to now), which I started in 2008. The title indicates an unpretentious approach: the music is made of very basic materials, and is very comprehensible in it’s intention. The piece seems to oscillate between the spheres of “music” and “ordinary reality” (unintentional sound generation). The listener may respond to this by raising the question, at what point a sucession of sounds actually becomes music.

The score provides a 108 min. time-structure refering to 12 modes of improvising, one of which is silence. The large scale is required to emphasize the music’s ambient character.

The piece was premiered in 2008, at Forum Neue Musik, Hamburg, by Thomas Niese & Thomas Österheld.
